Otherwise, the initial communication is complete. Thirdly, communication is rule-governed. There are certain tenets that informally structure the relationship between two people. Thus, the rules that are applicable when talking to one person might be unnecessary when talking to another. Finally, communication involves content and relationship. First of all, there is the material to be communicated, which is the content. Then, there are the dynamics that govern the two speakers’ communication, which is the relationship.

Question 2 The managerial leadership model by Blake and Mouton is a very old model that has survived multiple revisions to still be relevant today. However, the changes only seem to strengthen the model and not to dilute it as could be feared. Among the leadership styles resulting from the grid are the impoverished leader, the country club, the middle of the road, the leader and the team. This model reduces behavior into seven key elements (Dodd 18). The grid analyses two sides of leadership concern: concern for people and concern for production.

The result is that the leaders are graded as ‘authoritarian’, etc. The advantage of this grid is that it gives managers the power to evaluate their own leadership technique. Question 3 This is a model of awareness created by the American Joseph Luft. The Johari window is a great tool for the assessment of one’s communication skills. . We get to reveal these selves through communication with others. One of the interesting observations to draw has to do with the blind self. There is a side we reveal to others about ourselves which we are not aware of ourselves.

Question 4 Active listening is totally different from mere listening. Active listening merely seeks to make the listener repeat a message to the speaker so as to prove that they have understood what is being said. Passive communication also dwells more on function rather than form. The latter connotes passive following of what someone is saying. The former is a four step process (Dodd 37). The main steps are hearing, attending, understanding and responding. Each step has to happen in that exact order.

Responding reinforces understanding. Attending means paying attention. Question 5 Non verbal communications in some cases is even more important than verbal communications. This necessitates a better understanding of its functions and elements. Its functions are to complement, contradict, regulate and substitute verbal communication. In other words, it is secondary. There are several elements that are crucial for detecting non-verbal communication. They include emblems, illustrators, regulators and adaptors.

These four embody all the non-verbal cues. The cues include eye movements, fidgeting, gestures, and shivering, among many others. Question 6 The five communication styles Kilmann and Thomas identified for conflict management are accommodation, collaboration, compromise, avoidance and competition. Concern for others is measured up against assertiveness on the x and y axis respectively. They identified several theories to support their communication styles.
