Human Sexuality Human Sexuality Introduction Human sexuality refers to the ability to possess responses and experiences that are erotic. Sexual orientation of an individual usually influence attraction and interest the person has for another person. There are various 2ays through which people experience and express sexuality. Such ways include thoughts, desires, beliefs, practices, fantasies, values, roles, attitudes and relationships. Such ways often manifest by means of physical, spiritual, biological, or emotional aspects. The physical or biological aspects of sexuality largely concern the sex reproductive functions. The sex reproductive functions involve sexual response cycle of humans and the primary biological drive existing in every species. The bond that exists between individuals is also an indication of physical and emotional aspects. Species express such bonds through physical manifestations and profound feelings of emotional love, caring and trust. In addition, spiritual sexuality of an individual manifests itself spiritual links that one has with others. Cultural, philosophical, political, and legal aspects also have direct influence on human sexuality. Human sexuality can as well refer to ethical, moral, theological, or religious issues. Article Reviews Silverman disagrees that HPV vaccine increases sexual behaviors that are risky in his publication on the Wall Street Journal. The article highlights problems associated with human sexuality, particularly among teenage girls. Silverman is against the idea of giving an injection to young energetic and jumping that helps girls against fear that they may have. They assume that casual sex after pills is safer. The article touches on the vulnerability of such teenagers landing into the infection by different strains of papillomavirus among human beings. According to Silverman, such viruses can easily lead to manifestation of cervical cancer. Silverman argues that the debate that goes on about the safety of HPV vaccine, turnout of teenagers presenting themselves for the vaccine is generally low. The article notes that only 37% of people targeted of age bracket thirteen to eighteen years turned out for the vaccine. Silverman’s article, however, gives the results by new studies that show HPV vaccine is never a huge concern to lead to sexual behaviors that are risky. Apart from human sexuality, Silverman attests that the positive news will also touch significantly on the business aspects. Gardasil vaccine sold by Merck saw a dangerous fluctuation since there were parental concerns related to its side effects. The article explains that the fears came because the vaccine idea could easily lead to promiscuity. The article by Silverman assesses how the youths of grade eight have active sexuality that led them to become targets of HPV vaccine. From the article, there is comparison of the girls who were eligible for the vaccine and those ineligible. Have of those eligible had unfortunately completed their eighth grade by the time of offering the vaccine. After reviewing databases of approximately 260, 5000, one of the studies revealed that 127, 000 girls were eligible for the vaccine. Silverman reveals that approximately 7800 girls, who represent 5.6%, had already engaged themselves in risky sexual behaviors1. Further, the studies revealed that most of those engaged in risky sexual behaviors are mainly in grades 10 and 12. The unfortunate part of it, according to Silverman, is that 6.3% girls found eligible for the vaccine became either pregnant or had a development of a sexually transmitted infection. Silverman asserts that a strong evidence exists to show that HPV vaccination have no significant impact of clinical indicators that relates to sexual behavior among the adolescents. Te results gave a revelation that there was a great concern following the increased promiscuity due to HPV vaccine, which is unwarranted and call for no determent from vaccinating teenage girls at younger age. Silverman also gives an account another study that revealed that the vaccine had so little to do with increased pregnancy risks, sexually transmitted infections, as well as contraceptive counseling. The study, however, had a weakness because it covered a smaller sample size that could not give true revelation of the entire society. The study at some point failed to focus on the intended outcomes that include pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections, instead focused on the risk perception that came after vaccination. Silverman also highlights that views towards the vaccine could have affected the results such that the outcome was not as accurate as expected. In summary, Silverman article concludes that there is no relationship between increased sexual activities with risky sexual behaviors. The article emphasizes that not all girls who took part in increased activities of sex finally contracted sexually transmitted diseases or contracted pregnancy. In another article on the New York Times by Andrew Jacobs, Li Yankee is a leading advocated in china depicted as American trained sociologist who promotes one night stand, put pressure on government to stop criminalizing pornography and praises sadomasochist sex2. The New York Times also depicts her as a lesbian and a hero to gay in china. The article brings her out as a woman who has in China, from time immemorial, managed to push unsuccessfully for same sex marriage bill. The 63 year old Li recently initiated debate on human sexuality when she revealed that a transgender man. The article reveals her as heterosexual woman who made history by falling in love with other transsexual people3. The article further depicts Chinese people as being overwhelmingly sympathetic when they viewed Li with lots of surprises and sympathy. Daniel emphasizes that the people of China followed her news closely because of her unique and complicated sexuality. The author says her blogs attracted more than 360,000 following before she posed with her controversial husband in People Weekly cover. Her transgender character makes mainstream news outlets in the country visit her for interviews and produce respectful profiles. Jacobs acknowledges that every individual is unique in one way or the other hand, therefore, should receive respect once they make their choices. The article highlights that the vice of stereotyping others exists in China when certain individuals possess some unique characters. Jacobs brings out the theme of non-acceptance when a biological woman reveals herself as a man, people get surprised. Further, the article praises Li as somebody who has converted her sexuality uniqueness into a strength that she uses as a teaching tool to the society. Article Comparison Both the two articles from Wall Street Journal by Silverman and that from New York Times by Jacobs outline issues that surround sexuality among the female gender. Silverman discuses the negative impacts that befall teenage girls meet upon using HPV vaccination. He outlines how such vaccines leave the teenage girls exposed to infectious diseases transmitted through sexual intercourse. Jacobs in his article, on the contrary, addresses the torturous moments that female transgender females go through whenever they reveal their unique biological status. People stereotype them for that status and view them as outcasts. However, Jacobs uses other means such as media to help in establishing respect and understanding for individuals with unique characters. Silverman depicts young females as those exposed to dangers of diseases and unplanned pregnancy due to their sexuality. However, Jacobs uses his article to bring out a woman, Li who has struggled, made her state known to the public. In addition, she used her transgender state to educate the public that such conditions exist and normal. In Silverman’s article, the outcomes of the studies that revealed HPV vaccine as a negative influence towards contracting both pregnancy and infectious diseases did not receive any positive applause. In Jacob’s article, Li’s decision to make her transgender status known earned her respect from the media as well as acting as a lesson to individuals who never had an idea that transgender exists in China. Supportive Literature Human sexuality issues have various backings from different kinds of books and peer reviewed articles. For instance, Jacob addresses a number of human sexuality issues, particularly that of lesbianism, a factor that affects Li’s life. To prove that this is a supported issue, Brown raises gay hood and lesbianism as cultural malpractices in every environment. Brown asserts that homosexuality marked the post sexual liberation4. In Spinelli’s article, he also addresses issues about sexuality, particularly lesbianism and gay males. The journal summarizes a research by a sociologist Diamond who presents a research carried out on at least 100 women who had human sexuality uniqueness. At the beginning of the study, Diamond contacted and interviewed women who had labeled themselves as either bisexual or lesbian. However, stereotyping by the members of the society discouraged such women and by the time of research, the women had altered their names at least twice to avoid discrimination. The study is conspicuous evidence that the society and many cultures do not accept certain types of human sexuality. Spinelli also uses his article to give some of the reasons why certain human sexuality issues arise. For instance, he mentions times during war and seclusion as a reason why some people end up intimate, though same sexes. He also mentions prisons as areas that bring sexual fluidity in men. In war camps and related areas where male-with-male always remain as the only option for bonding among men highly contribute to gay pairs. He disagrees with the notion that gender experiences sexual fluidity in different rates and categories. He however, affirms that sexual fluidity degree correlates with the ability that one can have to focus particularly more on the person. Social Impacts of Sexuality Problems Most people who suffer from human sexuality problems often face challenges ranging from physical, emotional, and social ones. However, social effects are often remaining so outstanding that leaves an individual with massive psychological impacts. For instance, there is stereotyping, discrimination, and lack of acceptance from the society that surrounds the affected person. The homosexuals who declare their status publicly usually face rejection and labeling of names that discriminate or mock them in one way or the other. Such vices leave the victims in a compromising state not knowing whether to declare their status known or keep it as top secret5. Moreover, such individuals fail to interact freely with their peers for fear of identification and subsequent discrimination. Despite discriminative and lack of acceptance from the society, some of the sexuality problem victims at times find great publicity and recognition from media among other organizations. Such publicity is usually useful in educating the public to understand, appreciate, and respect persons with sexuality issues. Personal Impacts Persons with sexuality problems such as lesbians find it uneasy to identify partners because the cases are treated abnormal and unpopular. In addition, the persons find it difficult to deal, adopt, and live with the situation particularly for the bisexuals. Conclusion Current concerns on human sexuality dominating society today reveals various pivotal themes focused around biology, identity, and normality. Such issues that surround sexuality brings into concern unpalatable recognition for psychotherapists. Psychotherapists would address both psychological and personal issues affecting both the society and victims of sexuality challenges. Bibliography Brown, Michael.
