Summarizing and analysis In an attempt to explain his point of view, Mill brings out both support and controversiesbehind utilitarianism. In the work compiled by Arthur, Mill argues that the utilitarianism theory is based on aptness of actions if they promote happiness in the individuals (67). Mill is also of the opinion that happiness entails no pain and absolute pleasure (67). Though pleasure varies in terms of intensity, the basics of happiness such as upright lifestyle should not be ignored.

These facts emanate from the fact that human beings are natural beings, and that they interact in the social order. In line to this argument, therefore, utilitarianism may be used to bind the community, since the theory advocates for happiness. If all persons yearn for happiness, then morality will be first rated in the society (68). Of essence, Mill brings out the view that utilitarianism is based on happiness, and happiness comes from justice and existence of rights in the society (68). In summary, Mill argues that though controversies on wrong or right overtake the theory, especially in terms of morality, the theory hold a lot of significance (72).

A discovery of the basics of wrong and right would create a situation whereby they would be applied with a lot of ease. The ends of the actions by persons also determine what is good and what is wrong. Drawing a line between wrong and right creates a society which has some sense (71), since all actions are directed towards the good of the society. Of essence, Mill’s utilitarian theory is out to bring systems into place that will allow the society function not only in a just manner, but also in the fairness that it deserves (71).

If these rules and foundations are adhered to, it is possible that the society function in an orderly manner. The views brought forward by Mill can be justified, as he bases foundations of morals throughout the work. This interprets that all actions, according to Arthur, must be analyzed in terms of their good and evil (69). This means the moral nature of actions determine reasoning of right or wrong (68). Culture and stability of the society has also been analyzed. Mill is of the opinion that morality is special in the society since it shapes the actions portrayed by individuals.

This has been termed as the concept of utility (68). With the identification of utility functionalities, the moral foundation of the existence of humans in the society. Judging actions in terms of wrong and right, also justify the foundation of the theory (69). The ends which are good are therefore of moral standards and utility. In the event of disarray in the society, utilitarianism, in regards to Arthur, offers the best solution to a functional society, as morality is the first law of the theory (72).

In general, Mill argues that the society can only function if each individual is conscious of their actions. The moral worth of any action, according to Mill, results from the consequences of each action. In simple terms Mill argues that actions are considered right only if they provide a lot of good to many persons. In order for utilitarianism to be attained in the society, all persons must be of good intent, and supply the same to a substantial number of populace. Work cited Arthur, John.
