Engineering EthicsBy definition, professional ethics are the accepted code of conduct or rules that govern a professional body. Engineering ethics are very important to the profession since they define the dos and don’ts that all engineers should observe (Baura 15). This essay will therefore discuss a recent encounter with professionalism and the issues involved with the ethics.Engineering ethics are rules and regulations that are based on morals or the notion of wrong and right according to humanity.

Engineering ethics defines what engineers should do or not do according to the moral of the society. These ethics are primarily meant to protect the integrity of engineering work and therefore consider the interests of investors, public, and other stakeholders. Some of the engineering codes of ethics include NSPE, IEEE, and ADME. Recently I have encountered cases where engineers take a bribe to compromise the quality of a project. In such case, the engineer is bribed by the financier of the project to allow usage of substandard materials and equipment.

I have also encountered engineer who offer services that are not related to their area of competence. An electrical engineer offering consultancy in a civil engineering field was a common encounter. There are several issues involved with the misconduct of engineers and most of them if not all are related to the public safety. Usage of substandard material and equipment compromises people’s safety. In particular, projects such as buildings that have been constructed this way are a major threat to people’s safety.

Although most engineering fields are closely related, some differences determine the competence of resultant professions. A civil engineer who gives consultancy on a project intended to be an electrical engineering project gives out wrong or incompetent information and therefore fails to meet professional ethical code of conduct. Engineering ethics should be upheld at all times since failure to adhere to them greatly compromises the quality of service.Works CitedBaura, Gail. Engineering Ethics: An Industrial Perspective.
